Google planning opt-out option for WiFi data gathering
Privacy concerns have caused Google to back down a bit on its information collection amongst residential wireless networks. Beginning in the fall, the company will allow owners of the WiFi networks to opt-out of the data gathering. Google has assured concerned parties that it doesn't collect personal details when nabbing the information for its databases, but such comments haven't done much to calm the nerves of privacy advocates.

Widespread confusion over the scale and nature of cyber-criminality is undermining efforts to tackle a menace that may be costing the economy billions of pounds a year, a report has warned. The study says the government must take a firmer lead and provide people with clearer advice about what they should be doing to protect themselves from online fraud and theft.

Samsung Fires At Apple In France, Targets The iPad And iPhone
Two months before Apple won its import ban against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany, Samsung was launching an attack further West. The South Korea-based company filed a complaint against Apple back in July alleging infringement on three mobile-related patents with regards to the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, and both models of the iPad. The first hearing is expected to go down in December.

Android Beats iOS In European Smartphone Market Share, Still Behind Symbian
Europe is growing quite fond of Google’s Android operating system, according to market research firmComScore. Android devices now account for nearly a quarter of all the smartphones used in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK — a dramatic jump over the Google OS’s performance last year. In July 2010, Android only accounted for 6% of the smartphones used in those five European markets, putting it dead last behind Symbian, Apple, Microsoft, and RIM. One year later, Android has zoomed past their rivals in Cupertino, and now is second only to Symbian in terms of market share.

HTC dominates UK Android Market
More than half of the Android phones (50.9%) used in the UK are made by HTC, according to the latest ComScore data, with the Taiwanese company a massive 29% ahead of rivals Samsung who are languishing in second place with 21.6%. ComcScore's MobiLens research from the UK, Italy, Germany, France and Spain provides an insight into the UK market share enjoyed by major handset manufacturers.

Ofcom bans rollover contracts
Ofcom has today announced its intention to ban rollover contracts from December of this year for landline and broadband customers. Rollover contracts, known as Automatically Renewable Contracts (ARCs), require customers to “opt out” of their agreement or they continue onto a new contract period. Once this is in place consumers are tied and have to pay an early cancellation fee to leave the company.

Jailed for online abuse: man who mocked child suicide tributes
A man who posted abusive messages on memorial websites dedicated to dead children was jailed for 18 weeks yesterday, and banned from using social networking sites for five years. Sean Duffy, 25, admitted posting images on Facebook and YouTube mocking the deaths of four children, including Natasha MacBryde, 15, who committed suicide and was found dead on a railway line near her home in Worcestershire in February.

Lie detector uses heat cameras to detect the truth

British scientists have developed a new lie detection test using a heat camera that records the flow of blood around the eyes.
The researchers then combine results with a computer programme which monitors tiny changes in facial expressions
A preliminary study involving 40 volunteers found the system to be 70 per cent accurate in identifying liars.
