UK leads way in digital take-up
UK consumers are leading Western Europe in adoption of digital media according to a new report from digital research specialists eMarketer and media agency Starcom Mediavest.The latest Global Intelligence report also shows online advertising almost doubled in the UK to take over TV in terms of spend in 2008-09.The report highlights a trend in the UK of growing numbers of consumers aged 50 or over converting to online. A majority of the 2m users that started using the internet in 2009-10 were older, according to data collected by the UK Online Measurement Company and analysed for the report.

Such high-profile guests not only signal Alibaba's achievements but highlight its ambitions for the future. Having triumphed in the Chinese market, its sights are set on the world, beginning with the US, India and Japan.

Nokia World 2010 kicks off today
N9 and E7 both mooted, but has Nokia got anything else planned? Nokia World 2010 finally gets under way in London this morning, with the mobile world watching and waiting to see just what the Finns can do to wow the crowds and win back some much needed kudos in the smartphone sphere.While the N8 will doubtless dominate, the all-new E7 has also been slated for the event, which takes place at the cavernous ExCeL centre in east London. Whether the hyped up, MeeGo-packing N9 also takes a bow remains to be seen.

IDF: Tablets not ready for enterprise according to Intel
Tablet computers are not ready for the enterprise according to Intel.Speaking at the opening keynote of IDF 2010 Intel's chief executive Paul Otellini said that while tablet computers were an important new factor in the computing sphere they would not have an impact in the corporate world for another two years. He pointed out that Microsoft had tried to push tablets as a part of its Windows everywhere strategy, for perfectly understandable reasons, at the start of the decade. However, enterprise systems were still lagging. Plenty of managers used tablets he said, but lacked the infrastructure to support their hardware choices.

Samsung racks up 14m app downloads
Korean handset maker's app store now available in 109 countries. Samsung Apps has passed the 14 million download mark, twelve months after it was first launched. Initially launched in the UK, France, Germany and Italy among others in September last year, the store is now available in 109 countries.Costa Rica, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Iceland, Nicaragua, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago and Sudan the latest additions.

LG gives specs/release dates for Froyo phones
A smartphone for everyone is the slogan LG is utilising to push sales of its latest Android Froyo 2.2 handsets the Optimus One (due October in Europe) and the Optimus Chic (due November). And the company confidently predicted that it will sell 10 million units of these phones worldwide in an online press conference today. The Korean handset manufacturer is also very heavily promoting the ‘with Google’ branding on the Optimus One. Yet some of the key features such as the portable hot spot support, simply don’t match the ‘Froyo for skint dummies’ sector which LG says it is targeting

Global roaming market set for growth
The global roaming market is expected to grow by 86% between 2010 and 2015, delivering revenues of $67 billion, or 6.3% of total mobile service revenues by the end of this period, according to Informa Telecoms & Media’s latest research. Data revenues, driven by the accelerating smartphone phenomenon, will exhibit the largest growth of all service segments, delivering a 28% CAGR or a 246% increase for the period, the research showed. Underlying these figures, the research finds that the global mobile roaming market has entered a new, and also exciting, phase.

IPWireless and Streamezzo to develop integrated mobile broadcast apps
IPWireless, developer of integrated mobile broadcast (IMB) technology has announced that it has partnered with Streamezzo, a rich mobile internet application developer, to create and deploy rich, consumer friendly multimedia applications for mobile TV, video store and forward, interactive voting and more, based on the 3GPP IMB standard. IMB is capable of streaming live video, and broadcasting and storing popular content on the device for later consumption, both resulting in significant offloading of data intensive traffic from existing 3G unicast networks and an improved customer experience.

Lyons to step down as BBC Trust chairman
Sir Michael Lyons will step down as chairman of the BBC Trust in May, explaining that the job has become all-consuming and that he does not want to stand for a second term. The Trust chairman has written an open letter to culture secretary Jeremy Hunt to explain why he is not going to seek re-election to a body that has made some difficult and controversial decisions over the past 12 months.
