Ofcom enlists 4-year-olds to boost dodgy DAB stats
Ofcom has an interesting new definition of what constitutes a "radio listener". It now includes four-year-old children. And at a stroke, DAB radio's prospects suddenly look a lot healthier. Last month Ofcom released its "Digital Radio Report". One graph purports to demonstrate the reach of digital-only stations. Ofcom claims five digital-only stations are reaching over one million listeners a week. But on closer inspection, the listeners are aged "4+".

The wine merchant, which sources from niche wine makers around the world, is to use social media tools, including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, to promote its independent wine maker network by increasing video and blog content, and building customer interaction around wine maker profiles, methods and products.

Google: 200,000 Android phones being sold a day
Google CEO Eric Schmidt claims that 200,000 Google Android phones are currently being sold every day. Market tracker NPD has also recently reported how around one-third of all smartphones sold in the US between April and June this year were Android phones, mostly Motorola Droids.

Police data records need accuracy check, says inspector
PNC Inspections: National overview report, published by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary for Scotland, calls for the country's police forces to improve the accuracy and efficiency of data input to the Police National Computer (PNC). The document, published on Wednesday, says that most Scottish forces do not have a clear strategic direction in regard to the PNC. Typically, the inspectors found that junior members of staff were working hard to comply with the PNC Code of Practice, but using outdated and often costly working processes.

Digital radio listening increases 17 per cent
The share of people listening to radio via DAB, digital television or the internet increased from 21.1 per cent in Q2 2009 to 24.6 per cent in Q2 2010. The share of those listening to the radio via the internet is 2.9 per cent, up 33 per cent on the previous year. The number of people listening via DAB rose 20 per cent year on year and the number of people listening via their digital TVs rose 12 per cent in the past year.

Intel settles competition case with US regulator
The world's biggest microchip manufacturer, Intel, has agreed to tidy up its act under a settlement with US competition regulators over charges that it abused its dominance by bullying computer companies into exclusive deals. Intel struck a deal to resolve legal action brought by the US federal trade commission (FTC) by signing up to a list of requirements prohibiting unfair retaliation towards computer-makers that used chips produced by its rivals.

Inadequate NHS websites cost more than £86 million per year
The digital communications document, circulated in June, found that of 4,121 NHS websites more than 1,000 were no longer accessible and at least a third of the 2,873 remaining either suffered from poor content or were too difficult to navigate.

Clearwire to test 4G wireless technology
Clearwire, the US broadband wireless pioneer majority owned by Sprint Nextel, plans to test an emerging 4G wireless technology called LTE alongside the WiMax technology it is currently deploying across a nationwide network. Bill Morrow, Clearwire’s chief executive, said the trials, which will be begin later this year in Phoenix, Arizona are designed to “showcase” Clearwire’s ability to deploy both technologies over the same network.

Microsoft has declared that its next generation browser Internet Explorer 9 is faster than current builds of Firefox and Safari 5, with the final platform preview also posting an impressive Acid 3 test score of 95. IE9 is already causing a stir, with Microsoft throwing its significant weight behind the browser as it faces mounting competition from the likes of Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Mozilla's popular Firefox.
