Countries are risking cyber terrorism, security expert tells first world summit
The spectre of crashing power grids, stalled air control towers, hospitals brought to a standstill and defences left wide open was raised at the first cyber-security world summit that ended today, when politicians, officials, military leaders and industrialists warned that the US and other countries were failing to protect computer networks and were vulnerable to attacks of catastrophic proportions.

NASA to Go Boldly to the Bottom of the Sea
Two astronauts, a veteran undersea engineer and an experienced scientist will soon find themselves in the ocean depths off the east coast of Florida in a mock space mission to test exploration concepts and learn more about working in an unforgiving, treacherous environment. NASA on Tuesday announced the 14th expedition, which is part of NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations, or NEEMO. The 14-day undersea mission is scheduled to begin May 10.

Toxic Oil Dispersant Used in Gulf Despite Better Alternative
British Petroleum and government disaster-relief agencies are using a toxic chemical to disperse oil in the Gulf of Mexico, even though a better alternative appears to be available. As the Deepwater Horizon oil spill spreads, BP and the U.S. Coast Guard have conducted tests with Corexit 9500, a chemical designed to break oil slicks into globules that are more quickly consumed by bacteria or sink into the water column before hitting shore.

Telekom Austria turns phone boxes into car recharging stations
If you've run out of juice for your environmentally friendly electric car, a recharge may be only a phone call away, literally, under a new scheme unveiled by Telekom Austria here Tuesday. The telecommunications company has decided to turn its public telephone boxes -- which are in danger of becoming obsolete anyway thanks to mobile phones -- into battery recharging stations for electric cars.

Heineken Turns to Mobile Barcodes
Heineken is using ScanLife 2D barcodes on all packaging for Heineken and Heineken Light across the US for the Summer season, as part of its Plug into Summer music promotion. ScanLife VP Marketing, David Javitch, says this is the most extensive integration of 2D barcodes on packaging seen to date in the US, with the codes printed on “tens of millions” of packs.

What a Girl Wants: More Mobile Shopping, Survey Says
Mobile shopping company miBuys conducted a survey of 1,600 women on mobile phones and found that the overwhelming majority of them were open to more mobile marketing and mobile shopping. These respondents love using the mobile web overall, this study shows; 94% said they even use their phones to surf even when they’re at home and nearby much more powerful devices, such as laptop and desktop PCs.

Report Looks at Southeast Asian Mobile Ad Prospects
Mobile ad optimizer and advertising company Smaato has published a whitepaper, written by Nick Lane, chief analyst at MobileSquared, on the mobile advertising market in Southeast Asia. The whitepaper, based on new research from MobileSquared, offers information on the mobile internet boom in Asia. In 2010, more than 400m people in the region will have access to the mobile internet and the average user will generate 26.47 page impressions per day.

Tweetsii now on Android
Tweetsii connects info to physical places and sorts it all by users’ location, connections and interests.  It aggregates tweets and updates from other services (Foursquare, Gowalla, GyPSii, etc) to show users what’s happening and where. Users contribute to the dialogue by checking-in, giving out tips and alerts, and tweeting geo-tagged photos and comments.

Google streamlines search pages
Google has begun a global roll-out of streamlined search results pages introducing new tools to let people do better searches. Google vice president of search products and user experience Marissa Mayer said in her blog that it is all "so powerful and simple". Mayer called the changes a "metamorphosis" on the official Google blog, but they are not really that big.
