Orange gets the Toshiba TG01 smartphone
Having lost out to O2 on the Palm Pre, failing to break the same network's stranglehold on the iPhone and having to share a half-exclusive with T-Mobile on the HTC Hero, Orange has stolen a march on it's rivals by snaring the Toshiba TG01.

Phone tax not enough for full broadband rollout
BT has said that a proposed 50p per month levy on phone landlines will not provide enough funds to cover the entire UK with fibre-optic broadband. However, the company is prepared to guarantee a 15Mbit/s service where fibre-optic is available.

Clearwire 'Undecided' on Stimulus Bid
Clearwire remains undecided on whether it will bid for the funding of the U.S. broadband stimulus program. Loans and grants of a total of $4 billion is now available to boost the nation's broadband infrastructure. However, Clearwire may not bid for any of the loans or grants, although it started delivering Internet to smaller towns and cities in the U.S. It also has the largest holding of 2.5GHz spectrum of any single carrier in the U.S. and is already rolling out mobile WiMax.

Vodafone says LTE deployment will improve on 3G
Vodafone R&D Director, Professor Michael Walker, spoke at the Wireless 2.0 conference in Bristol today, about Vodafone’s LTE strategy. The object of Vodafone’s LTE strategy is to learn from the negative experiences of deploying 3G, having been stung by paying billions for spectrum in the 3G auction and then not using that spectrum for over a year. Vodafone wants to make sure the technology works before purchasing the spectrum.

EU roaming caps put pressure on operators
Competition between operators is expected to increase after new roaming charges took effect on 1 July, capping the cost of making calls abroad. Operators are already stepping up to the new rules. As well as abolishing voice roaming charges completely for the summer, Vodafone is now offering bundled data packages for customers while abroad.

£1billion fund to support UK technology start ups 
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the Department of Energy and Climate Change and the Department of Health will each invest £150million alongside equal investment from the private sector. They invest in a small number of specialist technology funds that will then fund companies. Both the private sector and the Government believe the fund will provide a market return.

Spotify offers first audiobook
Swedish music streaming service Spotify is offering an audiobook for the first time.
Along with music, Spotify users can also enjoy Wired editor Chris Anderson's new book 'Free: The Future of a Radical Price', which is narrated by Anderson himself.Introducing audiobooks, is one of a number of changes Spotify is making to its service.

O2 launches expert tech support
The internet service provider O2 has launched a new service for its broadband customers called "O2 Tech Support".  The service is designed to rival similar services like the "Geek Squad" and the "Tech Guys". The O2 Tech Support service in available at o2.co.uk and, as with the rivals in this field, it is a chargeable service.

TV comedy company launches YouTube channel
Pozzitive, the production company behind Little Britain, has launched an official YouTube channel to draw traffic away from pirate video clips. The channel will let viewers watch free clips from an archive of clips spanning 20 years. Revenue will be generated by linking back to the company’s main site and through the sale of official shows on DVD or for download.
