Microsoft is cutting current contractor pay by 10% and future contractor pay by 15%.  The software giant’s CEO, Steve Ballmer, said that he plans to continue looking for ways that the company can reduce costs.  The company employs almost 96,000 people.

The world’s number one mobile handset manufacturer, Nokia, reckons we’ll see the Symbian operating system running on laptops within the next five years. Nokia CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, revealed to Finnish national broadcaster, YLE, that his firm is looking "very actively" at the opportunity. Symbian could offer a number of advantages over established CPU OS, not least of which is the potential for superior battery life thanks to its optimisation for lower power consumption.

Apple’s iPhone has helped O2 buck the economic gloom and report a 10% rise in revenues. O2 grabbed 390,000 new mobile phone customers in the last three months of 2008, cementing its position as the UK's largest mobile phone company with 19.5 million users.

HP and Sun partner to launch Solaris

Sun and HP have agreed to a new deal which will see the Solaris software platform offered on HP's servers. Under the partnership, HP will bundle the Sun operating system on several of its ProLiant and blade server models. The companies also plan to work on future server models equipped with both Solaris and OpenSolaris.

UK government backs open source

The UK government has said it will accelerate the use of open source software in public services.

Open source software will be adopted "when it delivers best value for money", the government said. It added that public services should where possible avoid being "locked into proprietary software".

Telefonica Q4 net profit up 89% but company lowers 2009 guidance

Madrid-based Telefonica, Spain's largest telecommunications company by market capitalisation and subscribers, said net profit for the fourth quarter rose to EUR2 billion, from EUR1.06 billion a year earlier, above analysts' expectations for net profit of EUR1.8 billion.

Carphone Warehouse To Axe 450 Jobs

Carphone Warehouse Group has announced that it will cut 450 jobs at its call centers and head office as part of a strategic review to identify cost savings. The planned job cuts won't affect the group's store staff or its fixed-line and broadband Talk Talk service, but rather the group's joint venture with Best Buy Co. Inc. (BBY).

Samsung to embed fring

Samsung is to pre-load the fring social networking app on its Omnia HD phone. The deal extends the partnership between the two firms: fring is a member of the Samsung Mobile Innovator programme and has already pre-loaded on the Samsung Innov8. Samsung OmniaHD is the Korean vendor's flagship new touchscreen device, and was unveiled last week at MWC.

Motorola offloads mobile email platform

Motorola has announced the sale of its mobile email unit, Good Technology, to rival Visto for an undisclosed sum. The deal strengthens Visto's position as a provider of mobile email platforms to enterprises, mobile operators and OEM handset manufacturers. Motorola originally picked up Good Technology in 2006 to increase its presence in the enterprise space.

Microsoft unveils new kit at TechFest

Craig Mundie unveiled a bunch of new technologies at Microsoft's annual TechFest. Along with Commute UX, a system that enables drivers to interact vocally with in car devices and Situated Interaction, a project that weaves together multiple sensing, learning and reasoning components, Microsoft announced a new research organisation called Cloud Computing Futures that has the goal of reducing data centre costs by fourfold or greater, all while increasing reliability.

ID cards database breached by nosey council staff

The government’s controversial national ID cards programme received further backlash after routine checks revealed that staff at 30 local authorities had accessed the core database without business justification. The database, which contains information on nearly everyone in the UK, will form the core of the biometrics-based national identity register, under the government's ID cards programme.

Nokia hopes 1,000 staff will volunteer redundancy

Nokia will open applications for 1,000 voluntary redundancies on 1 March in an attempt to cut personnel related costs and involuntary redundancies. The offer will close either once 1,000 have applied or at the end of May.

VeriSign promises DNSSEC patch to stop hacking

VeriSign has promised to deploy DNS Security Extensions - known as DNSSEC - across all of its top-level domains within two years. DNSSEC uses digital signatures and public-key encryption to allow websites to verify their domain names and corresponding IP addresses.  DNSSEC has been deployed on top-level domains operated by Sweden, Puerto Rico, Bulgaria, Brazil and the Czech Republic. .org and .gov are deploying DNSSEC later this year.

British mobile phone giant Vodafone announced to axe 500 jobs across the UK business as part of a cost-cutting programme that aims to reduce costs by £1 billion by March 2011.

Motorola is pushing ahead with the development of time division duplex version of LTE that will move the Chinese 3G standard to 4G networks. The company will be working with operators on TD-LTE trials in China later this year. Full deployment is expected from Q4 2009 to mid-2010.

Vodafone is testing a 3G HSPA + mobile broadband connection capable of delivering maximum download speeds of 20 Mbps. Using technology from Qualcomm, Ericsson and Huawei, Vodafone claims to have achieved one of the fastest 3G data connections possible during field trials.

Ryanair launches in-flight mobile calls
Low cost airline Ryanair has launched an in-flight mobile phone service across 20 of its aircrafts. The airline aims to enable the service throughout its 170 aircrafts over the next 18 months, allowing all passengers to send and receive mobile calls and texts. Passengers will be charged up to £3 per minute for a call, around 40p to text and up to £2 to email from their mobile, Blackberry or other smartphones.

Intel is making a push into cloud computing with forthcoming changes in its Nehalem server line aimed at large datacentre deployments. Google has demonstrated a version of Gmail for the iPhone that allows users to browse and read emails even when the phone had no network connection. O2 has become the first operator to be officially certified with Carbon Trust Standard. O2 said the reward was recognition of its commitment to reduce its carbon footprint. The operator has made a 15% reduction in energy consumption over the past three years.

Mike Foley, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG, says the specifications will greatly expand the types of applications that can utilise Bluetooth for wireless communications.

Nokia is delivering a potentially paradigm shifting N86 cameraphone with a camera they claim has SLR-like optics and is good enough to replace your current compact digital one. With 8GB of internal storage, and a lens system from Carl Zeiss, this device can capture still images at 8 mega pixels, as well as 640x480 video 30 frames per second. The camera has a F2.4 aperture (so it's able to handle low light conditions) and includes a high intensity dual LED flash. Nokia is also using internal GPS to geo-tag all the photos.

Smartphones driving interest in Mobile Games
Smartphones are driving the mobile games market, led by the iPhone. ComScore/M:Metrics reports that the number of mobile game downloaders grew 17% between Nov 2007 and Nov 2008, however non-smartphone gaming dipped 14% during that same period. In Nov 2007 none of the top 10 handsets used to download a game was a smartphone, whereas a year later 6 out of the top 10 handsets used to download games were smartphones.

Samsung has partnered with Texas Instruments to create a mobile phone with an embedded projector. On display at Mobile World Congress it has DLP Pico chipset technology from Texas Instruments, allowing the phone to project an image up to 50in onto almost any surface. According to Analysys Mason despite the economic downturn, prospects for mobile advertising in 2009 are promising. Verizon Wireless announced that Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent have won the contract for their planned LTE network. Many had expected the contract to go to Nortel as the vendor was conducting field trials for Verizon.
